IDEMIA enhances security through biometrics in Volusia County
IDEMIA Public Security North America has recently implemented its innovative STORM ABIS system in Volusia County, Florida, transforming the way fingerprints are managed by law enforcement. This technological advancement promises increased efficiency and enhanced security for the local community.
A revolutionary system for fingerprint management
With the introduction of STORM ABIS, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office benefits from a state-of-the-art biometric solution. This cloud-based system allows fingerprint examiners to work more efficiently and securely. With an interface accessible via a web browser, users can easily upload, encode, search, and compare fingerprints.
The STORM ABIS system stands out for its ability to perform simultaneous searches in local, national, and federal databases, eliminating the need to connect to multiple different systems. This feature not only improves efficiency but also the accuracy of searches, as demonstrated by independent tests conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Increased efficiency for fingerprint examiners
The latent print unit of Volusia County, which typically handles cases for 15 to 16 different agencies, has seen a significant increase in efficiency thanks to STORM ABIS. Lindsay Jones, supervisor of the latent print unit, highlighted that each examiner can now handle 8 to 15 cases per week, compared to only 5 previously.
This improvement is largely due to the system’s ease of use. Examiners prepare images for a case, upload them to STORM ABIS, and perform searches with a few clicks. This simplicity allows examiners to focus more on analysis and less on administrative tasks, thus improving the speed and quality of investigations.
A partnership for enhanced security
The deployment of STORM ABIS in Volusia County is the result of a strong partnership between IDEMIA and the local sheriff’s office. Casey Mayfield, SVP of Justice & Public Safety at IDEMIA Public Security North America, expressed satisfaction with this collaboration, highlighting the already observed benefits and future potential.
Lindsay Jones also expressed her enthusiasm for working with the IDEMIA team, noting their expertise and transparency. This partnership promises to continue to develop, with prospects of extending search capabilities at the federal and state levels.
The STORM ABIS system represents a major advancement for Volusia County law enforcement, offering advanced biometric solutions for fingerprint management. This innovation perfectly illustrates how technology can be used to enhance public safety and improve the efficiency of investigative processes.
